Experiencing the City

This weekend has been one of the funnest weekends I've had in the city so far. On Friday night, a friend and I went to a Cajun restaurant and then to a Jazz Club called Snug Harbor. It was the coolest place, and we sat around listening to jazz and getting to mingle with some of the locals. Being Mardi Gras, we saw a few crazy sights in the French Quarter, but I'm told it's nowhere near what it was like Pre Katrina.

This morning we were supposed to go paint an elderly woman's house, but when we showed up, she didn't have paint, so we talked with her for awhile. She is 84 years old and she was just a really amazing woman.

Today, Blanca and I experienced our first Mardi Gras parade downtown. We went to the Ponchartrain Parade at 1:00 on St. Charles and then stayed for the Shangri La parade that followed at 2:00. I have to say New Orleans definitely beats Monroe when it comes to Mardi Gras. That's probably an understatement.

well the monroe parade was tonight so i know you won't be sad that you missed it. the one thing i learned from my mardi gras in new orleans is to always look the opposite direction when you hear a sudden uproar or yelling in a crowd. this usually means someone's about to show a little something that you really do not want to see. i don't know about now, but pre-katrina if you got tired of walking, you could step onto bourbon street and the crowd is so thick that you will be pushed forward and your feet really never have to touch the ground.

I think Katrina has changed things somewhat. There just aren't as many people. But the parades I went to yesterday were very family oriented. There were kids everywhere, and other than the alcohol kegs, it wasn't anything like what I was expecting.
